Lelah Virginia Crawford Auxier was born May 28, 1922 in Decatur County to Halah (McVey) and Harvey Crawford. She attended rural schools in Wayne County and graduated from Garden Grove High School with a normal Training Teaching Certificate in 1940. After getting her teaching certificate she taught in the rural schools of Decatur and Wayne Counties for five years. She then taught for two years in the Lucas Independent School and then in Humeston and Mormon Trail Schools for 39 years.
During the years of teaching she continued education at Simpson College and Drake University. She belonged to educational organizations at the local, district, state and national level. She was a delegate to the National Education Convention in 1969.
Virginia married Maurice Auxier on June 6, 1948. They had 54 years together before Maurice passed away on November 2, 2002. November 2, 2002.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Halah and Harvey Crawford, one brother Bob Crawford and one brother-in-law Russell Helt.
Virginia is survived by her son Steve and wife Beverly Auxier, two grandchildren Mickie and husband Junior and Rich and wife Christine Auxier and 4 great-grandsons; Cody Leer, Austin Leer, Brett Leer and Bryse Auxier all of Humeston, Iowa. Also surviving are her siblings; Junior (Marie) Crawford of Des Moines, DonNell (Hugh) Joy of Humeston, Betty Helt of Indianola, Kenny (Carol) Crawford of Garden Grove, one sister-in-law Mary Crawford of Dallas TX, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
