Virginia A. (Bajdek) Herek, 84, of Juniper Road in South Bend, Indiana, passed away Friday, December 2, 2005, at Regency Place in South Bend, Indiana. Virginia was born on May 20, 1921, in South Bend to August and Helen (Botka) Bajdek. She was a homemaker.

On May 1, 1948, as Virginia Bajdek, she married Florian F. Herek who survives. Also surviving is a sister, Irene Miller of South Bend; a sister-in-law, Florence Bajdek of South Bend; and several nieces and nephews. Brothers, Mike and Benedict preceded her in death.

Aunt Virg was a cantankerous spitfire who lived for giving two things to her family and friends; love and grief and not always in that order. We all knew that if there was a thunderstorm warning within 150 miles, Virg would be calling to make sure we were okay. She and Floyd made daily trips to every grocery store in town, and many of us didn’t have to buy our own laundry detergent and Captain Crunch for years. Her ham salad and chop suey were out of this world and she loved going to Pizza Hut, Bonnie Doons and Toasties. Virg was always sending Easter cards for Christmas and rarely

missed a baseball game. Virg was a constant role model to her countless nieces and nephews, teaching them about the truly important things in life: cursing in Polish, playing the accordion, rooting for the Cubs, Bears and Notre Dame, and most importantly…..drinking peppermint schnapps. The one thing she loved more than all of that though was Floyd, her soul-mate. Never have two people been more inseparable, Unk & Virg, they were almost one person.

Virginia was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, and formerly a member of the Rosary Society.
