Virgil Van Zee, the son of Engel and Dena (Breukelman) Van Zee, was born June 2, 1931 in New Hollard, South Dakota. He grew up and attended school in New Holland. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. 

On January 7, 1954, Virgil was united in marriage to Mary Lou Hamburg in Corsica, South Dakota. They moved to Newton, Iowa where they have made their home since 1954.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Katie Jo; two brothers, LeRoy and Raymond Van Zee. Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Mary Lou; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory and Belinda; Kurt and Laura; and Scott and Lori; all of Newton; his seven grandchildren, Tracy, Jill, Mary, Amanda, Maggie, Kylie, Chelsea, and Nathan; great-granddaughter, Allison, all of Newton; four brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Geneva; Herman; Ed and Adrena; and Riley and Pearl, all of Newton; three sisters and brother-in-law, Jeanette Vander Heiden; Gert and Ed Slings; and Dorothy and William Van Arkel, all of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.
