Virgil Chester Garrett, Jr. was born on May 14, 1935, in Independence, Colorado to Virgil and Leula (Polhemus) Garrett. He passed away at the age of 87 in Plano, Texas on Father’s Day, June 19, 2022.

Virgil was married to Marge (Pearn) Garrett in El Paso, Texas in November of 1980. He was a Targets Officer for the U.S. Government at White Sands Missile Range.

After retiring, he and his wife moved to Canon City in 1995. Virgil spent his days gardening, fishing, hunting, and making and selling jewelry. He enjoyed weekly family dinners, cards with childhood friends and their wives, Jan and Jim Starika and Carol and Joe DiOrio, and monthly luncheons with the Canon City High School Class of 1953.

Virgil is survived by his children, Guy (Kristi) Garrett, Brenda (Greg) Mendez, Denise (Howard) Price, Eric (Gayle) Clayton, and Adrienne (Scott) Mertens; grandchildren, Gabriella Mendez, Gibson Garrett, Kaeleigh and Travis Price, Devin Clayton, Heather Stevens, Nolan Clayton, Hayleigh and Emilee Mertens; as well as great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Virgil is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Lula (Polhemus) Garrett; sister, Mary Sumpter; brothers, Gay, Lee, Bob, Kenneth, Jim, and David Garrett; daughter, Theresa Clayton; and grandson, Russell Mendez.
