Anderson, Virgil Emil peacefully passed away on April 4, 2014 in Mesa, Arizona. Virgil was born on March 2, 1928 in Crawford County, Iowa to Emil Victor and Blanche Matilda (Bukacek) Anderson. After graduating from Vail High School, Virgil farmed the family farm south of Vail.

Virgil married Violetta Noelck on May 25, 1958 at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Iowa. Violetta passed away in May 1993. As an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, he served as Elder and on various boards. In addition, he worked for the Crawford County Assessor for ten years and served as President and member of the Vail Community Club, member of the FHA Board, Farm Bureau, and as a Township committeeman.

In 1980, Virgil was elected to the Crawford County Board of Supervisors. During his 16 years of service, he was Chairman of Region 12 Council of Governments, ADA, Third Judicial Board, Board of Health, Transit Advisory Board, New Hope Board, and Chairman of the Iowa State Supervisors Affiliate for Iowa State Association of Counties and on the ISAC Board of Directors. On June 29, 1996, Virgil married Laurel Brockmeyer Fantz and moved to their home near Bode, Iowa.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona, Algona Senior Center and past chairman of the Bode Community Club. Virgil enjoyed playing cards, fishing at Lost Island Lake, and spending winters at Towerpoint RV Resort in Mesa, AZ. Gardening was one of Virgil’s favorite pastimes and enjoyed sharing and canning the produce; he was especially known for his canned dill pickles, salsa, and sauerkraut.

Virgil was preceded in death by Violetta; his parents, Emil and Blanche Bukacek Anderson; his sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Burdell Schmidt; sister, Cheryl Listamann; and brother-in-law, Vernon Noelck. Survivors include his wife, Laurel; daughter Bette Rathjen and husband Eric of Arlington, Texas; son, Arlin Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska; stepdaughters, Sheree Fantz-Gut and husband Tom of Seattle, Washington; Rachael Fantz-Hancock and husband, Andy of Steilacoom, Washington ; stepson, Joel Fantz and wife Mina of Emmetsburg, Iowa; six grandchildren, Caroline Fantz, Helena Fantz, Weston Fantz, Sophia Gut, Reuben Gut, and Lukas Gut; brother-in-law, Walter Listamann; sister-in-law, Gladys Noelck; nieces, nephews, and several other relatives and friends.
