Virgie Mae Roper Stewart, a resident of the Salitpa community of Jackson, answered the Master’s call on Dec. 31, 2021 at her daughter’s home in Jackson. She was born March 31, 1936 to the parentage of Mary Henry Roper and Nealy Roper Sr. Early in life she united with Pine Chapel No. 2 Baptist Church in Toddtown, where she remained a faithful member until her health would no longer permit her to attend. She was also an honorary choir member at Springfield AME Zion Church in Salitpa, where she would often attend with her family. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Archie Lee Stewart; sisters, Marie Burroughs, Roseanna Roper and Betty Chapman; brothers, Matthew Roper, R.B. Roper, Archie Roper and Nealy Roper Jr. 

Left to cherish her loving memories are her five daughters, Mary Alice Jackson of Jackson, Edith (Randall) Bumpers of Winn, Shelia McCants of Toddtown, Sandra (Donald) Cox of Coffeeville and Deborah Stewart of Saraland; son, Samuel Lee Stewart of Salitpa; 12 devoted grandchildren, 19 devoted great-grandchildren and a host of step-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Burroughs of Grove Hill, Ella Thrash of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Essie Hall of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Hayes of Salitpa and Jessie Stewart of Jackson; one brother-in-law, John Curtis of Jersey City, N.J.; with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
