Violet Lovig, age 76, of Marathon passed away on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at UnityPoint – Trinity Regional. Violet grew up moving to various places in Iowa and Minnesota as her parents found work. They finally settled in Laurens, IA, where Violet attended Laurens High School all four years and was the first to graduate in 1964. Violet worked at Hens Super Value in Laurens when she met Artie Lovig at the Laurens Café on her lunch break in 1964. On April 22, 1967, she was united in marriage with Arthur M. Lovig at Bethany Lutheran Church in Laurens. The couple lived in Laurens, where they raised three children, Brenda 6/29/71, Andrew 2/20/73, Mary 3/3/76. The family moved to Cedar Falls, North Cedar area, in 1976 as Artie found work there and in Waterloo. Then they moved to Marathon in 1984 when Artie found work in Laurens. Violet was a devout Christian her whole life. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, vacation bible school, attending church every Sunday, and church events. She loved her children and adored her grandchildren, even helping raise them. She was proud that all three children and one grandchild graduated from Laurens, just like she did. Her hobbies were crocheting, sewing, quilting, puzzle books, drawing, and collecting dolls. Artie and Violet made it a habit to visit friends often and attend family gatherings to teach their children the importance of socializing. While living in Cedar Falls, Violet and Artie were immersed in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts with their children. For holidays she enjoyed making an entire meal with Artie’s help. She especially liked baking pies and cookies. Her favorite recipes were banana bread and apple crisp, so much so that she had them memorized. Even though Violet and Artie loved each other dearly, they did find activities they chose to do apart, Violet’s was playing cards or going to county fairs with friends and family. In late 2004 Violet was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her treatment was surgery with chemo and radiation afterwards. In the summer of 2005, she was in remission. As a cancer survivor of 16 years, she would participate in breast cancer awareness by doing walks and fundraisers for the Relay for Life organization. Survivors include her children: Brenda Lovig (Dean Stough) of Storm Lake, IA, Andrew Lovig of Storm Lake, IA, and Mary Peck (Chad) of Laurens, IA; her grandchildren: Christina, Ryan, Aynslie, Taryn, Ann, Brooklyn, Zane, Abigail, and Bryce; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; her Uncle Ron Johnson {Rose} of Laurens, IA; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Artie, parents Carl and Ivadel, her brothers and sisters, Joan, Nancy, Harold, Karolyn, Lester, Roger, Earl, Ruth, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
