Viola passed away peacefully at Senior Suites of Urbandale where she lived since May 2018.

Born and raised in Louisiana, Viola was the fourth of five children. She attended Louisiana Technical College from 1937 to 1941 graduating with a degree in Physical Education.

During World War II she worked as a railroad station agent. Viola later taught school in various Louisiana school districts including Caldwell, Calcasieu, and Pointe Coupee parishes. She achieved a Master of Education and Education Specialist degrees from McNeese State College in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Viola retired at 56 years old and, of course, went back to school taking art courses at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She was a founding member of the Natchitoches Art Guild and Art Gallery.

Viola is survived by her brother John W. Shell, daughters Nancy Rambo (Donald Bustell) and Kakie Lyde, and grandsons Andrew Watts (Marsha) and Erin Lyde (Jordan).
