Viola Ruth Beddingfield, 95, of Virginia, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia. She was born on Oct. 6, 1923, in Macoupin County. She was the daughter of William and Martha McDonald Schulze. She married Merle C. Beddingfield on Feb. 21, 1942, in Springfield, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1991.
She is survived by one son, Ronnie Beddingfield of Virginia; two grandchildren, Merle (Sandy) Beddingfield of Jacksonville and Lori (Brad) Belden of Pleasant Plains; four great-grandchildren, Caden and Coy Beddingfield, and Courtney and Cody Belden; and one great-great-granddaughter, Addison Huff. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Karen McGuire; and one granddaughter, Diane Beddingfield.
Mrs. Beddingfield was a 1939 graduate of Virginia High School and then received her degree from Illinois State University. She was a kindergarten teacher in Virginia for 25 years, retiring in 1978. She also started the Head Start Program in Virginia. She was a lifelong member of Virginia First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, a deacon, and an elder. She volunteered with Meals On Wheels and Bread of Love, had been very involved with and held many positions both locally and nationally with Order of the Eastern Star, and was a member of White Shrine. Viola enjoyed camping with her husband, and they were members of the Trailblazers Camping Club.
