Victor C. Wood, age 86, of Salem, died Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at his home. He was born, March 17, 1927 in Wetzel County, West Virginia, son of the late Walter and Retha (Pearl) Wood. Mr. Wood spent a distinguished 35-year career as an educator. He retired as Superintendent of Schools in Oregon, Ohio and had previously served as Superintendent of Schools in Salem and Leetonia, Ohio. Victor received BA and MA degrees from Austin College, Texas and pursued graduate education in school administration from Bowling Green State University, Ohio University and Columbia University. He served in the U.S. Army/Air Force during WWII and in Korea. He was a member of the Salem Golf Club, Masonic Lodge, Toledo Shrine, VFW, Kiwanis, American Legion and a life member of National Education Association. Victor was also a member of AASA, BASA, MENSA, Chamber of Commerce, member and chairman of Professional Communications Committee, chairman of Ohio Right to Read Committee Area I and listed in Who’s Who in the Midwest. Victor was a historian for the Gleaner Life Insurance Society of Adrian, Michigan. He authored two books documenting the history of the society. His wife, Marjorie (Roy) Wood, whom he married June 19, 1949, preceded him in death December 26, 2012. A son, Victor Wood Jr. also preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, David (Bernadette) Wood of Fredericksburg, VA and three grandchildren, Mikayla, Aidan and Rachel.
