RALEIGH- Vernon “Verne” Oliver Tyson passed away on Tuesday morning, December 4, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 28, 1935 in Richmond Virginia, the daughter of the late Lawrence Thomas Oliver and Elizabeth Gills Oliver. She is survived by her husband, Thrift W. Tyson, Jr.; daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Tyson Joslin and husband of Raleigh, North Carolina and Susan Tyson Kembel and husband of Grand Junction, Colorado; five grandchildren, Joel, Lydia, and Andrew Joslin of Raleigh and Stacey and Julie Kembel of Grand Junction, Colorado; and sisters, Carol Oliver Headlee and Beverly Oliver Baird both of Richmond.
Family and friends will long remember the example she showed in accepting adversity, her bright spirit, good nature and strong faith concealing her suffering. Her happiest moments were with her loving husband of 50 years, her children, grandchildren and the many friends she gathered in a lifetime of helping others.
Verne earned a bachelor of science degree in Medical Technology from the University of Mary Washington in conjunction with the Medical College of Virginia. She worked at the VA Hospital in Richmond and the American Red Cross Blood Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Her volunteer work included singing in church choirs, mentoring engaged couples, teaching English as a second language and the discipleship of young women in church. She enjoyed gardening and music of all types, especially teaching piano.
