Vern was a genuine twentieth and twenty-first century Natty Bumppo. During an internship with the Army Corps of Engineers in Alaska in 1951, he bagged a Black Bear. In 1971, he took a Desert Big Horn sheep, which is literally a once in a lifetime event. He was still pursuing quarry in the early 2000’s. Over the years, his love of the outdoors led him to pursue all of Arizona’s big game. He was good at it. Vern delighted in showing others his naturecraft skills, not to demonstrate his prowess, but to teach them to others. Vern was the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 544 and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Arizona. He loved to shoot skeet.
