Vern passed away at home early Jan 10, 2019 from complications due to a fall in Sept. 2018. He was the youngest child of Ross and Irene (Bowser) Nafus, born on a stump farm in Logan Township, Michigan, March 27, 1915.
He was the last surviving member of his family. His wife Martha (Marty Wallace), parents, three sisters and brother are deceased. He is survived by his five children, David, (Elly); Stephen (Rachel); Donald (Ilse); Joanne (Mike) Deyo and Judy (Jim) Marr. There are 12 grand children and 12 great grand children.
He attended University of Missoula, specializing in Forestry, but decided that he wouldn’t be able to get a job in that field easily. He took a year off from studying to ride the rails and work along the way to the San Diego Exposition in 1936. He had many interesting stories to tell about that time. He lived a long time and saw many changes in the world. From the first three pedal cars to cars working on computers, to telephones worked by hand cranks and featuring operators to cellphones and much more.
He graduated from Montana State University in 1939, with a Bachelors Degree in Agronomy, and he and Marty married shortly after that. He went to work for the Farmers Home Administration where he worked all his life. He lived in Polson, Flathead Lake, and Bozeman before being posted to Boise, ID in 1957, where he ran the FHA department for all of Idaho. He was again promoted and posted to Washington, DC in 1960 and lived and worked there for 10 years. He liked to say that he’d been retired longer than he worked for the Farmers Home Administration.
He and his wife, Marty, moved back to Boise, Idaho in 1973.
He was a kind and far thinking gentleman with a great sense of humor, and will be greatly missed by both his friends and family.
We would like to thank Keystone Hospice for their caring and kind help.
