Vernon Elwood (String) Shay, 80, of Tunnelton, died Saturday, January 16, 2016, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 23, 1935, a son of the late Ira and Sylvia Knotts Shay.
Vernon was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle and friend. Vernon was a veteran and served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1958, during peacetime. He was a coal miner by trade and retired from the Southern Ohio Coal Company. He enjoyed working in his woodshop, watching basketball, Pirates baseball, camping, trout fishing and spending time with family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marilyn Poland Shay, a son, Mike Shay and wife Teresa of Newburg; one granddaughter, Ashley Ridenour and husband Danny; one grandson, Evan Shay; two sisters, Helen Underwood and Wilma Ridenour; along with many special nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a son Patrick Shay; a sister, Ruby Sheets and two brothers, Glenn Shay and Darrel Shay.
