Vernon D. Roberts (Vern) was born on January 1, 1943 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Leo and Shirley Roberts. He spent most of his early life on ranches near Colorado Springs with a short period in Ely, Nevada. In 1958 his family moved to Penrose, CO where he lived until his death on August 4, 2012. Vern attended Penrose High School and later graduated from Florence High School in 1961.Following high school he attended and graduated from Southern Colorado State College with a BA in fine arts and then attended Ohio State University where he was awarded a Masters degree in Art Education. In 1965, he returned to Florence High School where he was an art instructor for both high school and middle school through 1997. For 32 years he enjoyed teaching art and mentoring several generations of students. After retiring from the school system he began conducting Native American pottery workshops at his Coyote Arroyo Studio in Penrose. Vern later became interested in local history and worked on numerous projects to collect and archive historical documents and photos of early Penrose and Fremont County. Vern is survived by his children, Jody Morgan (Mike) of Greeley, CO and Dylan Roberts of Abu Dhabi; a brother, Gary Roberts (Barbara) in Grand Junction, CO; and 5 grandchildren, Casey Rusch, Courtney Rusch, Cody Rusch, Brianna Roberts, and Lexie Roberts.
