Vernon D. “Bernie” Harris, 86, of Virginia, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
He was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Little Indian, the son of Richard P. and Verna Mallicoat Harris. He married Marlene A. Bateman on Aug. 1, 1954, and she preceded him in death on June 5, 2008.
He is survived by two sons, Richard D. (wife, Buffy) Harris of Virginia, and Ron Harris, of Virginia; three grandchildren, Michael R.D. (wife, Nicole) Harris of Jacksonville, Jonathon Harris Mitchell of Carlinville and Kasey Harris of Virginia; one great grandson, Easton Michael Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Harris was a carpenter, and had also worked at Oscar Meyer. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War.
Bernie enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing slot machines on riverboat casinos.
