Vernon R. Verjinsky, age 92, passed away on September 3, 2022 at Our House Assisted Living in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.

Vernon came into this world on July 23, 1930 in Wisconsin Rapids to Raymond and Bernice (Turbin) Verjinsky.  Vernon attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947.  After graduation, Vernon worked for Preway, Inc., and the City of Wisconsin Rapids Power and Light Company.

In 1952, he married Joyce E. Heidemann in Wausau, Wisconsin and they moved to Fairbanks, Alaska.

From 1952-1955, he worked his way up to Technical Staff Sgt., and from 1955-1959 he was an MP stationed at the Lincoln, Nebraska Air Force Base.  During his time in Lincoln, he was sent to Ashland, Nebraska where he served as an MP for the Secret Intelligence Base.  In 1959, Vernon left the Air Force and Joyce and he moved back to Wisconsin Rapids.  Vernon worked for the City of Wisconsin Rapids Street Department as an equipment operator, he was promoted to the Assistant Street Superintendent and then Superintendent.  He was then promoted to Operations Manager and served until his retirement.

After retirement, Vernon was elected to the Wisconsin Rapids Common Council and Wood County Board of Supervisors.  In 1994, he was elected mayor of the City of Wisconsin Rapids and served for eight years.  Vernon was very proud of being mayor and the accomplishments he was able to make over the years.  After he left his position of mayor, he and Joyce traveled to Alaska, made numerous trips to California to visit relatives, made trips to Branson, Missouri and then spent winters in Apache Junction, Arizona.  They enjoyed spending as much time as possible up north at their cottage with family and friends.

Vernon is survived by his sons:  Alan Verjinsky of Vesper, Wisconsin, and Keith (Connie) Verjinsky of Wisconsin Rapids; grandchildren:  Katie Martin of Homer, Alaska, and Kyle Verjinsky of Stevens Point, Wisconsin; sister:  Beverly Oberbeck of Wisconsin Rapids; and sister in-law:  Donna Verjinsky of Wisconsin Rapids, and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; Joyce; and brother Ronald (Butch) Verjinsky.
