Vernita Joan Schurtz, 79, of Galesburg, died on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, 10:21 AM, at Marigold Rehab & Health Care Center, Galesburg.Joan was born on April 30, 1938 in Elmore, Illinois. Joan Married J.D. Storm on January 4, 1957, he preceded her in death August 4, 1984. Together they had three children. She later married Robert “Bob” Schurtz in October of 1985. He later preceded her in death on December 29, 1995. She was the daughter of Jim and Pansy (Sargent) Philbee.
Joan is survived by her three children, Shahn (Steve Weast) Storm of Maquon, Dana Storm Chason of Lancaster, SC, and Delbert “Dale” (Linda) Storm of Mineola, TX; a brother, Mike (Brenda) Philbee of Galesburg; a sister, Ollie May (Andy) Stenger of Kickapoo; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Rodd Philbee, Jerry Philbee, Walter Philbee, and Frankie Philbee.Joan was a volunteer for FISH Food Pantry. She was a member of the Red Hats Club, and enjoyed going to dinner, her riverboat trips, and going dancing with friends. Joan was a talented yodeler.
She loved to spend time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joan will be dearly missed by her cats Crockett & Pepper.She started her working career at Pittman’s Café in Williamsfield, where she met J.D. She retired from Maytag after 30 years.Cremation rites for Joan have been accorded.
