Beloved of many

Vernia Alene Devenport, formerly of Arnold, MO, passed away in Alamogordo, NM on May 30, 2007. She was born on Feb. 1, 1914 on the family farm in Bollinger County, Missouri. Her parents were Archie Leroy and Zelma Lee (Killion) Long. She married Carl Sylvester (Pat) Devenport on Feb. 24, 1934.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl, three brothers, Leon, Harold, and Clyde Long and a sister, Faye (Long) Olsen.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses, James and Opal Devenport and Faye and Jeff Gentry of Alamogordo, Linda and Robert Narens, Jr. of Arnold. MO, and Sue and Robert Locke of Lithia Spring, Ga. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren and their spouses, Wes Gentry and his wife Elesha, Diane Silver and her husband Richard, Layne Gentry and his wife Jana, Debbie Sexton and her husband Mark, Mark Narens, Brian Locke and his wife Tina and Rachel Bright and her husband John. She is also survived by eleven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren, Weston, Staesha, Sierra, Ryan, Rachael and husband Erick, Matthew, Jacquelin, Jennifer, Andrea, Christina, Jonathan, Alex, McKenna, and Owen, one brother, David Long of Marquand. MO, and two sisters, Bernice Crites of Lutesville, MO, and Glenda Grindstaff of Farmington, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alene was a loving devoted wife, mother and homemaker who was always there for her family. When a severe housing shortage occurred during the Second World War, Alene and Carl opened their St. Louis home to many young people who flooded to the city to work in the war effort. She became a surrogate mother to each one of them.
