Ms. Hicks peacefully passed away at her residence in San Diego. She is the mother of Jameica Gist and daughter of Effie Ives and Robert Day.
Vernetta Hicks was born February 13, 1952 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She was the second of two children born to the union of Effie and Robert Day.
In 1957, Vernetta, along with her mother and her brother, Gregory moved to San Diego, California. Effie later married Joseph Ives, who loved Vernetta and her brother as his very own and also played a significant role in their lives.
Vernetta received her education in the San Diego Unified School District and graduated from Morse High School in 1971.
In 1972, Vernetta united in Holy Matrimony with James Harold Hicks. Their union was beautifully blessed with a daughter, Jameica.
During the late 1970’s, Vernetta began working at University Hospital as a Food Preparer, where she made several long lasting friendships along the way.
Vernetta was a very loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many.
On Thursday, June 12, 2014, Vernetta Hicks went home to be with the Lord. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Jameica Gist (Larry); her mother, Effie Ives; father, Robert Day all of San Diego, California; four brothers, Gregory Day, Joseph Ives and Reginald Ives all of San Diego, California and Paul Day (Sharon) of Murietta, California; one sister, Elaine Jerry (Irvin) of Murietta, California; three grandchildren, La Meka Manning (Theodore) of North Carolina, Larry Gist, IV and La Resha Gist; two great-granddaughters, Renate Gist and Tah’Niyah Manning; two sisters-in-law, Pretretia Dunlap and Pamella McAllister; her loving companion of twenty-two years, Henry Shaw all of San Diego, California; and a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends who will mourn her passing, yet celebrate her life.
