Verne Eldon Powell, 86, passed away after a short illness on July 28, 2018. He was a long-time resident of Boerne.
Verne Powell was born to Verle and Hazel (Decker) Powell in Groom, Texas on July 4, 1932. The family moved to Indiana before finally settling in Hereford, Texas. Verne spent a year at Texas Tech, then served in the United States Air Force. He completed his degree at the University of Texas at Austin, as well as earning a JD from the University of Texas Law School. After moving to Boerne in 1963, Verne entered private practice before beginning a career with the Small Business Administration.
Over the years Verne was widely involved in community organizations, including helping organize the first Berges Fest. He served on the board at the YMCA, the Rainbow Senior Center, and the Boerne Community Theater and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and as a judge at high school debate contests. Verne was active in Walk to Emmaus and was an ordained Presbyterian elder. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Boerne.
Verne was preceded in death by his sister Margie and his brother Garland. He is survived by his three children, Raymond Powell, Margie Emig, and Michelle Stewart, and by his ten grandchildren.
