Verna was a young professional woman who loved dancing. In her early career she worked at Pereira & Co Popcorn Factory. For entertainment, she attended most if not all big band dances in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and environs with the likes of Joey Lewis, Clarence Curvan, Dutchie Brothers and other popular bands of the 1950s/60s. She subsequently gave it all up to raise her family of six children: Michael, Derrick (deceased), Lu-Ann (deceased), Carlton, Kelwyn and Michelle Nicole. She’s the mother-in-law of Karen, Lystra, Alison, Beverly S., Beverly P., Donna, Josephine, Bernadette, and Joanna.
She was a woman of many talents and she was well known for her cooking, crocheting, wine-making, dancing and baking, especially her infamous Black Cake and Ponch-A-Crème. She was her children’s first dance teacher, placing them on her to feel the music and learn the moves. She has big-hearted and a woman of the community hosting several Thanksgivings annually for the children of Durant Street, Upper Belmont Valley Road, Trinidad.
Whether she was called Mom, Mammy, Granny, Tantie, Macomere, she was the adoptive mother of many. She was a very caring woman and opened her home and heart to all in need whether that was providing a roof over their heads or food to feed their bodies and souls. Growing up her children argued over who was her favorite; however, they do agreet that she was an impartial adjudicator. You all do wrong, you all get licks together!
