Vergie Jean Sykes-Bell was born July 12, 1941 to the late Thomas Sykes, Jr. and Gurnice Sykes, in Lawrence County, Alabama.
She departed this life January15, 2017 at 8:30 a.m., at her home in Hillsboro, Alabama.
Vergie accepted Christ at an early age, and was a dedicated member of Bethlehem P.B. Church in Hillsboro, Alabama. For 21 plus years, she served as Church secretary, and loved her church dearly. She was a 1959 graduate of Tennessee Valley High School, and furthered her education at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama.
She was a 28-year retiree of the Morgan County Health Department in Decatur, Alabama. She worked as an assistant nurse and was known by always keeping her hair and nails “perfected”.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her eldest son, Lawrence Carlton Bell.
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, Lawrence Bell, Hillsboro, AL.; one son, Darrius O. Bell, Mobile, AL.; one sister, Frances Ann (Johnny) Young, Jr., Hillsboro, AL.; three brothers, Freddie (Betty) Sykes, Decatur, AL.; John Sykes and Tommy Sykes, Jr., both of Decatur, AL.; two loving granddaughters, Shantia (William) Stewart Decatur, AL.; and Amber (Tirvarrus) Hadley, Tupelo, MS.; five adorable great-grandchildren, Nevah, Maikyh, William Jr., Tirvarrus Jr., and Serenity; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones.
