Vergene L. Gunn, 91, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at Westfield Quality Care in Aurora, NE.

Vergene L. Gunn was born November 28, 1930 in Hastings, NE to Norbert and Edna (Ahlstrom) Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Ong, NE. She graduated from Edgar High School in 1949. Vergene married Keith (Tink) Gunn on February 26, 1950 at her parent’s home in Edgar and they had a family of five.

Vergene was a homemaker and mom for several years. During that time she also played the pipe organ at the Presbyterian Church in Edgar.

She was a member of the Nuckolls County Friendship Extension Club and later a charter and active member of the MNO Extension Club. She was also a charter member of the Church of the Plains and Presbyterian Women. She served as a circle leader, deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher.

Vergene worked as bookkeeper for Superior-Deshler Co. for 22 years, a dispatcher for the Clay County Sheriff’s office for 3 years, a Census Enumerator, and a correspondent for the Clay County News.

Her hobbies included oil painting, quilting, making “scrubbies,” and puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Keith, brothers Byron Nelson, Burdon Nelson and sister-in-law Twila Nelson.

Survivors include children Randal (Carla) Gunn, Grand Island, NE; Larry (Judy) Gunn of Lincoln, NE; Beci (Chris) Blaha of Lincoln, NE; David Gunn of Mount Vernon, WA, and Kevin Gunn of Davenport, IA., sister-in-law Phyllis Nelson of Hastings, brother Daryl (Yvonne) Nelson of Roy, UT., five granddaughters, six grandsons, five great- granddaughters, eight great-grandsons, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
