Vera West, 92, died of natural causes on July 5, 2013 with her family by her side. She was born in Struthers, Ohio to Gustav Albin Engstrom and Elna Elizabeth (Lisa) Carlson Engstrom on October 2, 1920. In 1923 the family moved to New Sweden, a farming community west of Idaho Falls, Idaho, where she was raised. She was a farm girl, the only girl and middle child with six brothers. She would always tell her children she had 3 older brothers to beat up on her and 3 younger brothers to help take care of. Vera attended New Sweden School through the eighth grade and graduated from Shelley High School in 1938.
Vera married Harold K. West on March 23, 1940, a young man from a neighboring farm in New Sweden. They lived and farmed in and around Idaho Falls until moving to Boise in 1955. They moved to Burley in 1957 and returned to Boise in 1959 where they spent their remaining years. Vera supported Harold in his long career in Idaho agriculture traveling with him to every corner of the state.
