Vera C. Ritzo of Jacksonville, died in her sleep Nov. 14, 2008, at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville, at age 100.
Mrs. Ritzo was active her entire life, living independently until age 99. She loved to read and play cards to keep her mind active. She also enjoyed sewing, embroidery and spending time with family. She had an extraordinary memory and loved to share the remarkable stories spanning her long life with everyone around her.
Vera was born May 29, 1908, in Fort Pierre, S.D., to James and Celia Callahan. She worked for the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, before marrying Charles J. Ritzo on Aug. 18, 1941, in Lincoln, Neb. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Mr. and Mrs. Ritzo were sent to Hawaii where they worked for the Department of the Navy. They returned to Lincoln, Neb., after the war where they lived until retiring to Alamo, Texas. Mr. Ritzo preceded her in death on Jan. 31,1983. Mrs. Ritzo traveled and lived in many places including Hot Springs, Ark., and Springfield and Jacksonville, Ill.
She is survived by two sons, Timothy (wife, Marita) and Daniel, both of Jacksonville; two grandsons, Christopher (wife, Samantha) of Urbana and David of St. Louis; one granddaughter, Elise Meyer (husband, Larry) of Jacksonville; one great-grandson, Aiden Meyer; and many other extended family and friends.
