Venita is survived by her sons, Phillip of Springfield, Virginia, Douglas of Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, and Stephen of Bettendorf; her daughter, Becky Vitosh of Iowa City; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and many dear and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry and Helen Marie (Eyman) Gildemeister; husband, Norman in 1969; son, Curtis, in 1983; two sisters, Geneva and Irene; and brother, John Jr.

Venita married Norman M. Peterson on October 3, 1936 in Creston, Iowa. She retired at the age of 85 from the Skiff Medical Center in Newton where she worked as a seamstress for 25 years.

Venita was a graduate of Greenfield High School in 1932.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Raymond Hohl and the medical and nursing staff that cared for Venita at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Clinic at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics as well as the staff at the Iowa City Hospice for the wonderful care she would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Venita’s close friend, Jeanette in addition to all her other loving caregivers she cherished whose nurturing and compassionate assistance allowed her to remain in her home and enriched her life during her final days.

Venita lived a faith filled life and cherished her family and friends, her love of sewing and especially quilting, and her plants, but treasured nothing more than her daily walk with God. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
