Those left to honor Velva’s memory are her son, Brian Becker of Newton; 2 daughters, Susan Becker of Newton and Barbara Becker (and Kate Houston) of Minneapolis, MN; her granddaughter, Brooke (and Jarrett) Smith of Spencer, Iowa; 3 great-grandchildren, Tristen, Brayden, and Addisyn Smith, all of Spencer; and her sister, Susie Van Dine of Dubuque, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, B. Wayne and Edna (Ball) Stitt; husband, Joseph “Joe” F. Becker in 2000; her 2 brothers, Dr. Paul Stitt and Dr. Ronald Stitt; and sister, Gladys Bredfeldt.
Velva was a graduate from high school in 1931 in Liberal, Kansas. She then attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas from 1932-1934 and then the University of Iowa School of Nursing in Iowa City, Iowa from 1934-1937.
