Velma Godfrey Shelton, age 86, of King George, Virginia, was promoted to Glory and met her Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 17, 2016. She was born on September 1, 1929 in Rock, West Virginia, to Ezra and Regina Godfrey. Velma moved to Indian Head, Maryland, as a teenager and met her husband, Ralph Shelton, when she was only 17. They married on September 30, 1947.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Ralph Shelton, Sr., daughter, Sarah “Sally” (Jimmy) Shepard, granddaughter, Amber (Jeff) Thompson and the two joys of her heart, her great-grandsons, J. Alexander and Judah. She leaves behind her two brothers, James “Jim” (Helen) Godfrey and the Rev. Thomas “Tommy” (Anna Mae) Godfrey as well as her sister, Joan (the late Gary) Hoyle. Velma is preceded in death by her son, Ralph Thomas “Tommy” Shelton, Jr. and her two sisters, June Turner and Georgie Chaney, with whom she is now celebrating. Velma’s love reached beyond her immediate family and touched her extended family as well – nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces and cousins. Each held a special place in her heart.
Velma loved living. She was feisty, full of joy, carried a song in her heart and a Scripture to share, a testimony of God’s faithfulness and a gentle reminder that in any trial, Jesus would see you through. Velma lived a life that left a legacy and she knew that only what is done for Christ will last. She sought God for the needs of others daily and loved her family deeply. She will be missed immensely.
