Veda M. Sams, 91, of Chariton, passed away at Legacy Lodge on May 3, 2012.

Veda Marie Sams, 91, of Chariton, Iowa left this world to go to her eternal home on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Legacy Ledge in Chariton, Iowa.

Veda was born on March 5, 1921 to Howard and Edna Baughman near Russell, Iowa.

She and her twin sister were the oldest of nine brothers and sisters.

She graduated from Indianola High School in 1939.

September 29, 1940, she married Pearl Sams.

They celebrated 71 years of Holy Matrimony in September, 2011.

They were blessed with eight children, six of whom are still living.

Veda gave her life to Christ as a girl and served her Lord faithfully throughout her life.

She lived as a witness of God’s love and grace in her marriage, as a beloved mother, grandmother and friend, as well as a Pastor’s wife.

In addition, Pearl and Veda were instrumental in founding and building the Jericho Hills Campground in Lucas, Iowa where they served as the first Camp Superintendent and Head Cook.

Veda is survived by her husband, Rev. Pearl Sams of Chariton; son Vernon Sams (Vivian), daughter-in-law Elaine Sams, .wife of the late Leonard Sams, daughter Virginia Miller (Kaz Basik), daughter Betty Clark (David), son Rev. Darrell Sams (Cathy), son Leland Sams (Carrie), son Rev. Glen Sams (Lori).

In addition, she is survived by eight brothers and sisters, twenty-five grandchildren, forty great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Edna Baughman, one brother, Donald Baughman, her twin sister, Vera Cannon, one infant daughter, Priscilla Sue and one son, Leonard Sams.
