Vance O. Smeltzer, 83, of Elkhart, died Wednesday, July 29, at Elkhart Hospice House.

He was born Nov. 8, 1931, in Wakarusa, to Guy V. and Marie O. (Letherman) Smeltzer.

On Nov. 22, 1958, he married Joan R. (Leatherman) Smeltzer in Elkhart.

In addition to his wife, other survivors include one son, Jeffrey Smeltzer of Elkhart; two sisters, Echo Ignafol of Auburn, Mich., and Shirley (Robert) Morice of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one brother, Ward (Jean) Smeltzer of Goshen; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Vera Miller, Opal Popke and Rita Artley; and three brothers, Firm “Pete” Smeltzer, Ivan Smeltzer and Keith Smeltzer.

Vance served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was employed as an engineer with C.G. Conn for several years and later worked at Bayer Corp. for five years before retiring in 1994.
