Vance Luther Toline, age 92, of Stromsburg, Nebraska, passed away March 15, 2020 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Health Center in Osceola, Nebraska.
Vance was born May 8, 1927 to Joel and Lillie (Carlson) Toline in Polk County, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home where he remained a life long member. He grew up in the Swede Home Community, where he attended rural school west of Swede Home and graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1944. Thereafter, he shared farming responsibilities with his father.
He was united in marriage to Elaine Henggeler on December 7, 1948 at Swede Home. On August of 1963 a daughter Cindy was adopted into this family. They were engaged in farming a number of years in the Swede Home area and he served a period in the armed forces during the Korean Conflict from July 23, 1952 until January 19, 1953.
On Sunday, February 10, 2019, Vance was inducted into the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame after playing for the Detroit Tigers in the 1940’s.
He very much enjoyed the outdoors, sports, hunting, fishing, gardening and the special fun, happy times with the grandchildren. He was always there to those in need, to lend a helping hand, as long as health permitted. He had a very bold infectious laugh.
He was a sales representative for the Walnut Grove and Cargill Companies for many year. The family moved from the farm to Stromsburg in 1983, where they since have resided.
In August of 2018 he moved to the Midwest Covenant Home.
He was a member of the Stromsburg American Legion Post #132.
Survivors include his wife Elaine of Stromsburg; daughter Cindy (Dave) Klein of Kearney; three grandchildren, Chelsea Carlson of Omaha, Grant (McKenzie) Carlson of Lake Stevens, WA, and Bryce Carlson of Lincoln; older sister Francis Wafer of Colorado and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Harlan, sisters Ruby Farris, Eda Peterson, Beulah Hagan, Doris Whitney.
