Vachel Harding, 93, of Virginia, IL died Sunday morning, January 21, 2018, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL.

He was born September 28, 1924, in Cass County, the son of Sol and Mabel Ross Harding.

“He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate – bringing forth food from the earth” – Psalms 104:14.  Mr. Harding loved farming and the land.  He had a brilliant mind even though he had to give up formal schooling at an early age to help with the family farm.  He read constantly to keep informed of new farming techniques as well as current events throughout the world.  Vachel was a great administrator and knew the best ways to run a farm through his own education, hands-on experience, and hard work.  He physically farmed until just a few years ago.  As a hobby, he loved attending farm auctions, sometimes buying, but always checking out the equipment and other items for purchase.

He is survived by two nephews, Robert Eugene Megginson (wife, Kathleen) of Ann Arbor, MI and Stephen G. Megginson (wife, Catherine) of Beardstown; two nieces, Sandra K. Walker (husband, Robert) of Virginia and Nancy Lynn Megginson of Santa Cruz, CA; a grand nephew, Thad Walker (wife, Gina) and a grand niece, Jodie Tate (husband, Joe), all of Virginia; and four great-grand nephews and nieces.  He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Katharine Mae Megginson and, in infancy, Ruth Harding.
