Uncle Tony Gilpin, 66

MUNCIE – Tony Gilpin, 66, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 30 after a 16-year battle with cancer.

Tony was born on November 17, 1946 in Muncie, IN, the son of Donald Gilpin and Joyce (Hammel) Gilpin. While at Franklin Junior High and through high school he was known as Anthony Sciscoe. In Junior High, Tony was a member of the singing group ‘The Casuals’.

In 1962, Tony attended Muncie Central but was given the opportunity to transfer to the brand new Muncie Southside. Even though he was a 1964 graduate of Southside, he will always be a Muncie Central Bearcat. At Southside he played football and wrestled.

After graduation, he went to work at Chevrolet Muncie where he worked for 15 years in the forge before leaving to work at the family business, Don’s Electric.

In 1982, after running a successful booth at the White River Flea Market, he decided to open a baseball card shop, Tony’s Rookie Corner. After selling the business in 1988, he realized he missed it and a short time later opened the Baseball Card Cellar on Tillotson in the VanTassel building.

The baseball card shop closed in 1994, at which time he and his wife became full-time real estate agents. In 1997, Tony retired from real estate and became an antique dealer and eBay seller, later opening an antique store in Yorktown in the old bank building.

For the last several years, Uncle Tony has been a regular fixture at the counter of the Old 67 Antique mall. He was also an active member of the Muncie Coin and Stamp club.

Tony is survived by his wife of 36 years, Deborah (Shaffer) Gilpin; daughter Kimberly Berner (husband Michael); son Matthew (wife Melinda); two granddaughters, Catrina and Hannah Berner; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and grandparents.
