Mr. Tommie Lee Hall was born September 20, 1949 in Americus, GA to Charlie Frank Monts and Bessie Mae Hall Monts. In 1953 they moved to Detroit, MI. where he was educated in the Detroit Public Schools and attended Kettering High School.
Tommie demonstrated a great love for music at an early age. He was blessed with a natural gift of singing. His melodious voice would leave you wanting more as it soothed your soul and entranced your spirit. In his teens, he and his friends could often be found “doo wopping” on the streets of Detroit. They would entice you with their harmony as they emulated the latest Motown artists. One of his favorite artists was James Brown. Not only could he sing, he also had spectacular dance moves. He would glide across the floor or stage with a granular style. He always paid attention to detail and would keep his self well groomed at all times. He was a very sharp dresser and his smell would linger in any room he entered. Tommie became a member of an R&B group who performed on the Detroit hit dance show the “Scene.” However, he truly loved gospel music – and embraced quartet singing. Tommie confessed his Christian belief and attended Zion Hope Baptist Church while the pastor was the Reverend P.M. Martin. He married Sandra Jones and to this union they had three daughters who were the joys of his life. Tommie moved to Alabama in 1986. He became a member of “The Gospel Sons of Glory” passionately recording and singing traditional gospel sounds throughout the Huntsville area. Tommie was affectionately known in Huntsville as “JB” for his striking resemblance to James Brown. Tommie had the ability to make people laugh. He was very sociable and kind loving man. Although he took ill he remained vibrant, joyful, and resilient to that day that the Lord called him home to glory. He was also known for affectionately giving nicknames to children. Names that he called you for the rest of your life. Tommie believed that Jesus was Lord; He believed the truth of the Gospel. Prior to his transition, he remarked that he was ready to go.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Theotis and niece, Kalisha.
