     Thurman (Spec) Alton Spangler, Jr. age 93, of Fairmount, Georgia, died peacefully on Saturday, October 21, 2017. Spec was born on July 5, 1924, in Chickamauga, Georgia. An enterprising youth, he trapped animals, fished, and did odd chores to help his family get through the difficulties of the Great Depression. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served on a destroyer escort in the North Atlantic. After his Navy stint, he enlisted in the Army/Air Force, and when they split, he went with the Air Force, retiring from there in 1964. Then he worked for the U.S. Government until his final retirement. Spec was an avid gardener and a collector of a variety of things. He also enjoyed raising ornamental chickens and various other birds. He had a quick wit and a wry sense of humor. 

     He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Ethel (Bonnie) Gaynell Smyers Spangler. H

     He is survived by his sister, Sue Wilson of Port Richey, Florida; son, Larry Spangler and wife Angie of Fairmount, Georgia, and son James Spangler and wife Cathy of Richardson, Texas. He is also survived by grandchildren Jim Spangler, Brandon Spangler, Deborah Guyette, and great grandchildren Kaydence Spangler, Calliope Rennert-Spangler, Samuel Rennert-Spangler, Niko Guyette, and Faye Guyette.

     The family would like to thank all the people who kindly and lovingly cared for Spec in his final years.
