Thurlo Martin Ashton (1913-2010)
Thurlo M. Ashton, Colonel USAF (Ret.), age 96, passed away on January 4, 2010, at his home in Niceville, FL.
Mr. Ashton was born in Oklahoma. He moved with his family moved to Whittier, CA, and he graduated from Whittier College with a degree in Mathematics. He joined the US Army Air Corp during World War II and served overseas. He remained in the US Air Force after the war and served in Argentina, Illinois, Texas, the Panama Canal Zone, and the Pentagon, specializing in International Affairs. He retired from the Office of the Secretary of Defense in 1963.
In the mid-1970’s, Mr. Ashton moved to Cusseta, AL, and began a cattle farm near the Lee County line adjacent to Interstate 85, eventually maintaining a herd of more than 100 head of Limousin cattle. He worked with the staff at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University to develop more efficient management procedures for his cattle.
After more than 20 years in Cusseta, he then retired to the Bluewater Bay resort in Niceville, FL, in 1995.
Mr. Ashton is survived by his wife, Amanda Ashton, of Niceville, FL. He is also survived by his sister Frances Martindale of Oakland, CA; his daughters Kathryn Ashton of Winter Park, FL, Michelle Graf of Stafford, VA, and his son, Michael Ashton of Marietta, GA; his grandchildren Kellie Williams, Joe Williams, Kristi Davis, Katy Ashton, Max Ashton, Austin Graf and Bryce Graf; as well as five great-grandchildren.
