Thomas Thatcher, retired attorney and local character, died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 5:45 am. Son of attorney Mark Thatcher and school teacher Meda Ahlum, Tom and his twin brother Bill (deceased 2003) were born October 6, 1925 in Perkasie, Pennsylvania.

Like their father, Thomas and William both graduated from Franklin and Marshall College and later went on to the University of Pennsylvania Law School where Tom was on Law Review and met his first wife, Helen Mae Zion. Their two children, Leslie Thatcher and Mark Thatcher, both Flagstaff residents, are Thomas’s only children.

After a stint as a Navy Lieutenant at the Brooklyn Naval Yard, Mr. Thatcher practiced law in Philadelphia, PA; Fort Lauderderdale, Vero Beach and Lakewood, FL before moving to Flagstaff to assist his son’s business start-up.

Tom, with his long white pony tail, became a fixture in downtown Flagstaff for many years, frequenting the library, Macy’s, Late for the Train, The Post Office.

He is survived by his daughter and son, Leslie and Mark,and his grandchildren David Hautemulle, Lilian Hautemulle, and Michael Hautemulle, and Ishai Thatcher; his elder brother, Charles, of Quakertown, PA, and his younger sister, Julia Witmer, who resides with her husband Charles in Doylestown, PA.
