Thomas Peter Greenawalt, age 82, of Fairfield, beloved husband of 63 years of Florence Greenawalt, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the CT Hospice in Branford. Born in Fairfield, the son of the late Seba and Josephine Greenawalt, he had been a lifelong town resident. He was a graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School.
Mr. Greenawalt worked for his grandfathers’ sand and gravel business, the Peter B. German Company. He then developed his own business with his two brothers, Paul and Duane, the Mohican Valley Concrete Corporation. Lake Mohegan was excavated by Tom and his brothers during the 1960s as part of their sand and gravel business and later sold to the town of Fairfield for use as a park.
Thomas was a private pilot, one of the first members of the Fairfield Elks Lodge and enjoyed yacht racing for many years. Survivors in addition to his wife Florence include three beloved children, Thomas P. Greenawalt II, and his wife Elizabeth, Mark Greenawalt and his wife Sara and Donna Sedgwick and her husband Scott all of Fairfield; five cherished grandchildren, Rachael, Marc and Danielle Greenawalt, Scott and Jessica Sedgwick. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Paul and Duane Greenawalt.
