Thomas Patrick Whalen, 65, of Cromwell, beloved husband of Irma (Santiago) Whalen for thirty seven years, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 5th at his home. Born on May 20, 1948 in Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX, he was the son of the late Edward and Agnes (Ryan) Whalen. Tom lived in Libya, Africa for some time while his father was stationed there. The family returned to the United States and moved to Meriden where they had family. He attended Saint Rose School, Maloney High School and graduated UCONN in 1970 with a Bachelors Degree and 1972 with a Masters Degree. Tom taught Social Studies in Windsor, first in Sage Park School and then in Windsor High School until retiring in 2006. Tom loved sports and any and all physical activities. As a child, he loved biking, hiking and camping and always had stories to tell of his adventures with his friends and the good times they had. As an adult, he became a ski fanatic, skiing as often and as late in the season as he could. Killington was his favorite resort and he had the chance to go there this past March and see it for the last time. Outer Limits in Killington was his favorite ski trail there. He also skied Tuckerman’s Ravine in New Hampshire once, taking his favorite dog, Trishka, with him. Tom also loved to bicycle and one summer biked from Meriden to Chicago. He loved to watch UCONN men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. He was involved in his children’s lives, coaching many of the soccer, baseball, softball, and basketball teams they were on when they were young or travelling to see them play on their high school and college teams. Cape Cod was one of Tom’s favorite destinations although he enjoyed his trips to Europe, California and Puerto Rico. Along with his wife, Tom is survived by his children, Colin Whalen and his wife, Jamie of Waltham, MA, Sean Whalen of Norton, MA and Shannon Whalen and her fiancé, Ben Fellows of Rocky Hill and his brother, Dennis Whalen and his wife, Keni of WA.
