Thomas (Tom, Todd) Newton Cowell passed away on Nov. 22, 2022. Tom was born on February 7, 1930 in Wana, WV, the son of Arthur Ray and Lona Lough Cowell. Tom graduated from West Virginia University in 1960 with a mechanical engineering degree and worked as a Station Superintendent of the coal-fired power generation plant in Cumberland, MD before moving his family to Greensburg to work at Allegheny Power (Cabin Hill) for 35 years. Tom briefly served as a member of the US Army, last stationed at the White Sands Missile Range. For years, Tom enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the country, sometimes visiting family and friends. He was an active 92 year old and looked forward to weekly golfing with friends and his bowling league, where he even achieved a perfect 300 game. Tom also enjoyed meeting Allegheny Power Retirees monthly at breakfast. Tom grew fresh vegetables in his backyard garden, giving extras away to friends and strangers, and spent many summer days on his 1956 Ford tractor in WV. He was known to chop down trees for friends or plow the snow from a neighbor’s driveway. Tom will be remembered as always having a lengthy joke, making homemade vanilla ice cream and loving to spend time with his family. Tom will especially be remembered for his unwavering loyalty and love of Ford trucks and fast driving in his younger days. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Carl, Arthur, Hubert, Albert and a sister, Alberta Haught. He was a devoted husband for 62 years to his late wife, Jean Cowell, the love of his life. He is survived by his 2 daughters, Donna Senft (Dan) and Sharon Kolson (John), 2 sister-in-laws, Almuth Bishop and Betty Bishop. Tom was proud of his 4 grandchildren, Maureen Ward (Evan), Brian Senft, Andrew Kolson and Erica Kolson and 4 great-grandsons, Micah, Peter, Timothy and Zachary Ward, who especially brightened his day.
