Elise and Rachel McHugh would like to share the news of the passing of Thomas (“Tom”) Myron McHugh.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Diana Gale McHugh; his mother, Muriel Mae McHugh; his father, Joseph Myron McHugh; and his stillborn brother Charles (“Charlie”) McHugh.

He is survived by his daughters, Elise and Rachel McHugh; sister, Margaret Mattina of Kelseyville, CA; brother, William (“Bill”) McHugh of Albuquerque; sister Mary Gonzalez and brother-in-law Marty Gonzalez of Los Chavez; and a large and loving extended family of relatives and friends too numerous to list here.

Tom spent his life committed to individual and social justice and service to the people of New Mexico. He was funny, intelligent, kind, and inherently compassionate. He never took a person for granted, recognizing each person as the significant human being they were.

Among the many jobs he held, Tom worked and retired after over thirty-seven years of service in state and local government. Throughout his career he also volunteered for a variety of organizations. He was a lifelong Democrat who took his civic duty very seriously. His volunteerism included campaigning for candidates he believed in, volunteering as a fire and rescue person in Valencia County, serving on various boards, and offering free tax preparation assistance. He also served in the army for two tours, primarily at Fort Mead as a medical service technician, and was discharged honorably.

Much more could be said about him, but we’ll finish by noting that his daughters are grateful for the father that they had, for the man that he was, and for all that he taught and represented.
