Mr. Thomas L. “Tom” Leer Sr., 72, of Elkhart, passed away at 10:56 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born in Goshen on July 12, 1940, to the late Wilbur L. and Evelyn (Burke) Leer. On Nov. 3, 1985, he married Juanita Viars in Elkhart. She survives at home.

Also surviving are his sons, Thomas L. “Tom” (Amberly) Leer Jr. of Constantine, Mich., Gregory D. “Dean” Williams of Elkhart, Nathan O. Tacy of Glendale, Ariz., and James C. Penninger of Ocala, Fla.; daughters Marcella R. Clements of South Bend and Nancy J. Eutsey of Goshen; brothers Wilbur B. (Marilyn) Leer of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Brad Chokey of Goshen; sisters Cheri A. (Larry) Scheetz, Dawn M. (Steve) Yoder and Gail (Gene) Davis, all of Goshen; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Tom spent many years as a truck driver for several Elkhart area RV manufacturers, including Patrick Industries. After his retirement, he remained busy with the company that he founded known as “The Little Red Wagon Taxi Service,” which specialized in the transportation of Amish families. He had also served in the U.S. Air Force as a jet aircraft mechanic in France and Germany.
