Norwich, CT – Thomas J. Ward 85, of Hamilton Ave, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the W.W. Backus Hospital in Norwich with his family by his side.
He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 26, 1928 son of the late Thomas and Nora (Rirondan) Ward. Thomas served his country honorable in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict with a rank of Staff Sergeant. On November 17, 1951 he married the love of his life Elinor Burns at St. Patrick’s Church in Norwich. Elinor predeceased her husband of 60 years on November 25, 2011.
Tom was a longtime communicant of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Norwich and a member of the couples club at Sts. Peter and Paul. He was a life member of the 3rd degree Knights of Columbus and since 1961 a 4th degree Daniel Mullen Assembly. Mr. Ward was a life member of the B.P.O.E. and a past-president of Literacy Volunteers of Norwich and AHEPA Building #3. Tom was a former member of the East Great Plain Vol. Fire Dept., the Democratic Town Committee and a Justice of the Peace.
Mr. Ward was predeceased by two brothers, John J. Ward and Daniel Ward and two sisters, Margaret Theresa Venterella and Mary Josephine Haines.
Tom is survived by his two children and their spouses, Daniel and Nicole Ward of Pittsfield, NH and Maureen and Michael Kirby of Norwich, one sister Ellen Mary Klymor of St. Louis and one brother Patrick J. Ward of St. Louis, five grandchildren, Sarah Ward, Dylan Ward, Jenna Ward, Casey Ward and Colin Kirby.
