Thomas J. McCarthy, 80, of Holiday City West, Berkeley Twp., NJ, passed away Monday, May 15, 2017 at home surrounded by family. Born in Jersey City, NJ, he lived in Rutherford, NJ and Brick, NJ before moving to Berkeley Twp. 5 ½ years ago. Tom was a 1955 graduate of St. Michael’s High School, Union City, NJ and attended Seton Hall University. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War, serving for two years and one tour in South Korea. Tom was a Technician for Western Electric, Kearny, NJ.

He was later transferred to AT&T in Parsippany, NJ and New York City, retiring in 1989. Following retirement, Tom was a Security Supervisor for Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, NJ for 10 years then served as an Usher behind home plate at the Lakewood Blue Claws for 16 years. He loved his job as an usher and the many friends he made during his time. He was a parishioner of St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Twp. and was a former parishioner of St. Martha’s RC Church, Point Pleasant, NJ, where he served as a Lecter and Eucharist Minister. Tom was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Knight of Columbus Council 836, Brick, NJ, where he also started the Columbian Squires.

He also served as Cub Master of Boy Scouts Pack 47, Brick, NJ, served as Athletic Director of St. John’s CYO, Jersey City, was Track Coach of St. John the Baptist CYO, Jersey City, and worked as a Referee for St. Dominic’s Basketball , Brick. Tom was predeceased by two sisters Marie Van Dyk, Betty Curtin and a brother Sonny McCarthy. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helene (nee Pacella), three sons Raymond McCarthy and his wife Emily of Ponte Vedra, FL, Thomas McCarthy and his wife Meg of Allentown, NJ, Kevin McCarthy and his wife Melissa of Hamilton, NJ, a sister Anne Nierstedt of Jersey City and 13 grandchildren.
