Thomas Elam Holmes, Sr. entered the presence of his Lord on August 27, 2012, after a long and full life. Mr. E, as he was called by those who knew and loved him, was born on December 29, 1919, in Marion, AL. He worked many years for Standard Oil Company before opening Holmes Standard Service Station in 1962. He moved to Birmingham in 1976 and started T & E Painting and Decorating, Inc. with his son Tommy Holmes. He was preceded in death by Mary Belle Garner Holmes, to whom he was married for 47 happy years and his son, Tommy Holmes. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Dorothy Hammett Holmes; Grandsons, Mike Holmes (Jan) and Scott Holmes (Melissa); Grandchildren Clay Holmes, Reagan Holmes and Zachary Holmes; daughter-in-law, Charlene Holmes; a sister, Fredna Holmes Edmonds of Selma, AL and uncle and best friend, Bruce Nichols of Marion, AL. By his marriage to Dorothy Holmes, he gained another family who loved him as their own, Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather, Brenda Cash (Walter), Harold Hite (Donna), Christie Mason (Mike), Lynn Cash Stone (Rock), Michele Cash, Brian Hite (Jenny), Preston Hite (Janelle), Jessica Mason Hussey (Marc), Hannah Mason Cooper (Clint) and Leah Mason, Jeremiah Stone, Evan Hite, Logan, Nathan, and Own Hite, Caleb and Mason Hussey and baby Mia Marie Hite, who preceded him in death. He was a member of Centerpoint First Baptist Church. The family would like to express our appreciation to all the friends who called and visited and especially to Tanya Cooper, Monika Harris and Felicia Mitchell who lovingly cared for him during his last days. We would also like to thank Care First Hospice for their care of him and the family.
