Thomas F. McCarthy Jr, 62, of Parker CO, passed away on September 10th, 2022, at The Denver Hospice after a 5-year battle with Colon Cancer.
Tom was born in Chicago IL to Thomas and Laurann McCarthy. He and his younger sister, Laurann, grew up in Naperville IL. Tom often spoke fondly of his childhood surrounded by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
In 1981, they moved to Arvada, Colorado, where he worked various jobs until beginning his 30+ year career with the Denver Post/Denver Newspaper Agency. He made many life-long friends at the Post and touched many people’s lives. In 2012, he traveled to San Pedro Sula, Honduras to help open a call center there for the Denver Newspaper Agency where he quickly earned the nickname, “Chico”. He touched many hearts during that and subsequent trips to Honduras.
He met his soulmate, Tamara Sandoval, May 9, 1987. After the first date, they became inseparable and went on to get married July 21, 1990, by Tom’s uncle Fr. David Brown. Knowing Tom’s love of music, and of David Bowie in particular, Uncle Dave even managed to mention Bowie in the ceremony. Soon after, Tom & Tamara (T-n-T) bought their first home in Denver, Colorado where they started their family. Brian was born in 1992 followed by Kevin in 1994. The young family moved to Parker, Colorado where they spent time camping at “The Property”, going to car shows and cheering Kevin on at football games.
Tom’s love of music was well-known by all who knew him. He was the lead vocalist with the band Planetary Defense when he and Tamara met. He quit the band to devote more time to his family, but the home was always filled with Tom belting out whatever his favorite music was at the time. He played with a couple other bands over the years and honed his musical talent. His last project was collaborating on and recording an album of original music as the voice of The Majestik Mystics. He was always sharing his love of music with everyone and during the last few years, greatly enjoyed going to concerts with his sons. His gift of humor and contagious smile will be sorely missed by all.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Laurann McCarthy. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Tamara and their sons, Brian and Kevin as well as his father, Thomas McCarthy Sr; his sister, Laurann McCarthy and his nephews, Wyatt Sandoval and Bryant Smith. He also leaves behind numerous family and friends.
