WATERBURY –  Thomas F. Quinn, 89, passed away peacefully at Waterbury Hospital on Saturday, January 31, 2009.  He was the beloved husband for 64 years of the late Betty Canning Quinn.  Mr. Quinn was born on November 14, 1919 in Waterbury to the late Henry and Anne (Healy) Quinn, the youngest of 10 children.  He graduated from St. Mary’s Grammar School, Crosby High School, Perry’s Business School and New Haven College with a degree in Accounting.

Mr. Quinn was a lifelong Yankee fan and enjoyed the occasional trip to Yankee stadium with his friends.  When it wasn’t baseball season, he would frequently watch the Yankee Classics on TV.  He played baseball in his youth, earning the nickname  “Lefty”.

While outwardly quiet and serious, Mr. Quinn was an extremely intelligent man with a keen sense of humor.  He had great strength of character and a strong sense of fairness and justice.  He was always polite and courtly and believed in treating people as he wished to be treated.  He shared a love of antique collecting with his late wife, and beautifully refinished many pieces of furniture displayed in their home.  He completed the N.Y. Times crossword puzzle every Sunday.  He had an avid interest in both local and national politics, and was always ready for a lively political discussion.  He enjoyed many different types of music and whether it was Glenn Miller, folk or Bluegrass, music was always playing in his home.

Mr. Quinn was devoted to his late wife, his children and his grandchildren and was happiest when everyone was together.  He cared deeply for his brothers and sisters. Family meant everything to him.

He is survived by his son, Thomas J. Quinn and his wife, Marianne Verrell Quinn, of Annapolis, MD;  two daughters, Betty Quinn Corbett and her husband, F. David Corbett, of Waterbury, and Virginia Quinn McCarthy and her partner, Steven Anderson, of Woodbury;  two grandchildren, Chris Corbett and his fiancée, Joanne Hinman, of Waterbury, and Megan Quinn Anderson and her husband, Eric Anderson, of Odenton, MD;  two sisters, Betty Kennedy Ahearn of Waterbury and Emily Malinowski of Southington;  and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brothers, Bill, John and Henry Quinn;  and by his sisters, Agnes, May and Ann Quinn, and Gertrude Quinn Kenneson.  He was also predeceased by his son-in-law, F. Patrick McCarthy.

Mr. Quinn’s family would especially like to thank his caregivers, Rosa, Savi and Ann, who have been with him since he fell 1 ½  years ago.  Because of their devotion and care, he was able to stay in his own home safely where he was happiest.  They were devoted to him and he loved them in return.
