Thomas E. Eckert, 91, Huntington, IN, passed away at 2:20 p.m. on December 26, 2020 at his residence.
Mr. Eckert was born March 8, 1929 in Huntington, Indiana to Raymond and Emma Jane McVoy Eckert. His parents preceded him in death.
Tom married the love of his life, Winifred (Winnie) Nicholson, on October 28, 1950 and they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past October. Mrs. Eckert resides in Huntington.
Mr. Eckert was a 1947 graduate of Huntington Catholic High School. He served in the Army National Guard for five years. He retired in 1991 from the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 166. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd degree and a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
In his retirement, Tom enjoyed woodworking and family. He was a master craftsman and was self-taught on how to cane chairs. He hand crafted a caned, child size rocking chair for all of his children one Christmas. He was a perfectionist in his work. He always said, “If you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all”. Tom has helped all of his children with building or improving their own homes. There wasn’t anything he didn’t know how to do or fix. His home was always welcome for everyone.
Survivors include fourteen children: Kathy ( Gary) Bishop, Huntington, IN; Jerry (Diane) Eckert, Huntington, IN; Tony (Sarah) Eckert, Warren, IN; Connie (Nick) Gast, St.Henry, OH; Carol (Larry) Hohe, Huntington, IN; Cindy (Kevin) Prus, Huntington, IN; George (Terri) Eckert, Markle, IN; Clare (Roger) Hunckler, Mocksville, NC; Margaret (Larry) PeGan, Huntington, IN; Rose (Brian) Carroll, Warren, IN; Mary Ann (Mark) Schaefer, Columbia City, IN; Sarah (Mike) Garrison, Fort Wayne, IN; Dr. Julia Eckert, Coldwater, OH and Father Tom Eckert, CSC of Notre Dame, IN; 49 grandchildren and 82 great grandchildren.
Tom is the oldest of thirteen siblings. He is survived by four sisters: Betty Kindler, Huntington, IN; Mary Jane (Don) Bartrom, Huntington, IN; Marilyn (Buddy) Hayes, Huntington, IN; and Diane (Jim) Carl, Huntington, IN; and four brothers: Chas (Judy) Eckert, Robinson, IL; Dave (Mary) Eckert, Huntington, IN; Kenny (Cheri) Eckert, Huntington, IN, and Ray Eckert, Huntington, IN.
He was preceded in death by four brothers: Jack, Fritz, Don and Joe Eckert.
