Thomas A. Daly, 98, formerly of Huntington, IN died peacefully on April 25, 2010 at Woodhaven Care Center, Murrysville, PA. Mr. Daly was born on October 5, 1911, in Hammond, Indiana the only child of William C. and Helen Shea Daly. His parents preceded him in death. He was married to Ruth Eleanor Hammond for 65 years prior to her passing in 2001.
A summa cum laude graduate of Purdue University in 1934, he was elected to Eta Kappa Nu, the international honor society for engineers, served as Editor of the Purdue Engineer and was a member of the Triangle fraternity. Tom had a long and noteworthy career as an executive with Westinghouse Electric. He was granted thirteen patents in a variety of areas including the Mark 37 torpedo, power transformers and the submarine Polaris missile launcher. He concluded his career as Corporate Director of Reliability Engineering and Product Safety.
As Founder Chairman of the Reliability Division of the American Society for Quality Control, he was a prolific writer, lecturer and keynote speaker. During the World War II his efforts in developing the homing torpedo led to citations from the Navy and the Office of Scientific Research and Development for “”significant contributions leading to the successful prosecution of the war.”” He led a full and active life in retirement traveling throughout the USA and Ireland, boating and fishing on Youghiogheny Lake, swimming and sunning in his pool.
He proudly served as a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was a longtime supporter of the Covenant House and Republican Party. Mr. Daly is survived by three sons: William Daly and his wife Linnie; Michael Daly and his wife Linda and Richard Daly. He was a beloved grandfather of Amber (Nina), Alicia, Brian and his wife Amanda, Caitlin, Ryan and Richard and (Michele Boullie). He is also survived by great-grandchildren Breanna, Courtney, Callista, Aiden and Scarlett; former daughter in law Candace and ten nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen.
